La sera del 24 novembre 1970, Yukio Mishima consumò una cena di addio insieme a quattro membri del Tatenokai (l’Associazione degli scudi) con cui il giorno seguente avrebbe portato a termine il suo eclatante suicidio pubblico. Gli uomini mangiarono al Suegen, un piccolo ristorante del quartiere di Shimbashi, Tokyo. Poi Mishima andò a trovare i suoi genitori. Fu una visita breve, apparentemente consueta e ordinaria. Rientrato a casa, raggiunse il suo studio e, come faceva abitualmente, cominciò a lavorare nel pieno della notte. Firmò l’ultima versione del quarto volume della tetralogia del “Mare della fertilità”, apponendovi la data del 25 novembre 1970. Scrisse poi una breve frase su un foglio di carta, lasciato sulla scrivania: “La vita umana è così breve e io vorrei vivere per sempre”. Ebbe così inizio l’ultima notte del più grande scrittore giapponese del Novecento, dell’uomo che poche ore dopo sarebbe diventato definitivamente l’ultimo, autentico samurai.
